The Morning Call, Lehigh Valley, PA (November 1, 2012) -- The explosion, near the intersection of 13th and Allen streets, was caused, investigators say, by a cracked, 86-year-old cast iron distribution line. It killed five people and destroyed eight homes.
Ofelia A. Ben, 69; her granddaughter, Katherine Cruz, 16; and Katherine Cruz's 4-month-old son, Matthew Vega, perished in the blast. Neighbors William Hall, 79 and Beatrice Hall, 74, also died in the explosion. The Hall family settled with UGI last year.
Manuel Cruz, who is Matthew Vega's grandfather, and Steven Vega, who is Matthew's father, have settled the portion of the wrongful death lawsuit that involves the 4-month-old's death, said their attorney Christian Perrucci.
