FPSF Leads Health Care Team in Public/Private Partnership for NJ's Largest Hospital

FPSF Partner Paul T. Fader, along with FPSF attorneys including Mary Kate Serratelli and Katharine Fina, as general counsel to the Bergen County Improvement Authority (BCIA), led a team of health care professionals and the County of Bergen in orchestrating a new public/private partnership for New Jersey's largest hospital. Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III committed the County to saving Bergen Regional Medical Center, an important Safety Net Hospital for Bergen County and Northern New Jersey.

"It was County Executive Jim Tedesco's commitment and leadership that made this ground breaking public/private partnership a reality," said Paul Fader.

After a process almost two years in the making, which included a health care advisory committee report, an exhaustive public bid process, and negotiating a long term lease and operating contract, county officials signed this new ground breaking agreement on July 14th.

The BCIA and the County of Bergen entered into a long term agreement with Care Plus Bergen. Care Plus Bergen has agreements with Care Plus NJ,  Integrity House, and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Services, to provide behavioral health, substance abuse, long term and acute care services at Bergen Regional Medical Center, a 1,070 bed facility.

Bergen Regional Medical Center is the state's largest hospital and is a safety net facility which provides essential services to the under served, uninsured, and indigent population. This new agreement represents a public/private partnership between the County of Bergen and two prominent, private non-profit health care providers and Rutgers, the State University of NJ. This partnership will enhance and expand services for patients in the region, regardless of ability to pay.

“This is a true victory for all who will benefit from this new partnership. We thank Paul Fader, Mary Kate Serratelli and Katharine Fina of the Florio Perrucci Steinhardt & Fader team for their instrumental counsel and expertise through every step of the process,” said Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III.  An existing 19-year contract with Bergen Regional Medical Center LLP is set to expire on September 30, 2017.

Care Plus Bergen will take over the day to day operations of the facility on October 1. Transitioning is now underway. It is expected that Care Plus Bergen will rename the facility.
